In Scoil Mhuire we are passionate about keeping healthy and active. We have an Active School Flag Committee. Our committee comes up with ideas to keep us active and they spread the word about the importance of being active every day.

Scoil Mhuire was awarded our first Active School Flag in June 2022. We have an Active School Flag display board with lots of photos, updates, and challenges so that everyone in our school knows about all the exciting activities that are happening and are ready to take part.

As part of our Active School Flag campaign, we focus on a different activity each month. Below you will see an overview of the kinds of things we do:

September We focus on learning playground games. This makes yard time fun for everyone.
October We have soccer coaching with Brendan from the FAI, and we introduce the Daily Mile.
November Our 1st, 2nd & 3rd Class pupils enjoy GAA coaching with Na Fianna Clonard and St John’s Volunteers
December We do an Active Advent Calendar which we enjoy very much.
January Our Infant Classes get a chance to try out GAA coaching too. Our Soccer for Dads & Lads is run by our HSCL Coordinator, where parents from our school come together to play every week.
February We introduce the Run Around Ireland Challenge. We also participate in the Marathon Kids initiative where 5th & 6th Class run a whole marathon together and receive medals for their efforts.
March We run a 5-a-side soccer tournament for 3rd to 6th Classes. The Rackard League Gaelic Football competition runs during March for 5th & 6th Class pupils.
April April is Autism Acceptance Month and we run our annual Blue 5km fundraiser in aid of Rainbow. The Rackard league Camogie and Hurling competition takes place during April.
May We focus on our skipping skills.
June We run our annual Active/Wellbeing Week, one of the highlights of the Active Calendar.

In Scoil Mhuire we also run the Playground Leaders programme. In April 2022, twenty-four 4th class pupils received training from Sports Active Wexford. They learned how to organise and facilitate games for younger pupils at playtime. Three times a week, they dedicate their lunch break to setting up games and activities for junior pupils and pupils in our special classes. These activities include running & chasing games, parachute activities, ball games, bubbles, chalk drawing and much more. The Playground Leaders play a very active part in Active/Wellbeing Week too.

Our Playground Leaders are creative, responsible, enthusiastic, safety aware and kind. We are hugely proud of them.
